      Responsibilities:
      The Plumber II performs a series of skilled tasks in the plumbing trade by assisting more senior-level trades workers and performs related duties as required or assigned.
      Under limited supervision, the employee performs installation, modification, maintenance and repair work on university plumbing, irrigation, and gas systems and equipment. To include:

      • Performs skilled journey-level work to diagnose defects and to install, repair, and maintain piping systems and fixtures for water, sewer, or natural gas with a high degree of quality and efficiency;
      • Tests, repairs, and maintains cross-connection devices and pressure vessel safety devices;
      • Performs routine, recurring preventive maintenance activities without direction or oversight and within established schedules;
      • Cuts, threads pipe, and makes proper connections;
      • Installs, repairs and replaces valves, controls, traps, tanks, etc.;
      • Repairs and replaces motors, pumps, expansion tanks and irrigation systems;
      • Tests, installs and maintains gas piping and equipment;
      • Maintains wastewater management systems;
      • Installs and/or replaces fixtures; performs work on site or in a shop;
      • Drives a vehicle to and from locations and keeps vehicle supplied with tools and materials and keeps it maintained and in an orderly, clean condition;
      • Performs miscellaneous duties such as cleaning and painting the equipment and mechanical areas;
      • Picks up materials from suppliers when requested. Inspects areas and reports problems to supervisor;
      • Maintains paperwork and electronic communications, including work orders, including recording time;
      • Orders and includes materials on work orders in an expedient manner;
      • Follows established university and departmental policies and procedures;
      • Follows established safety procedures and reports accidents and problems to supervisor promptly;
      • Performs assigned progressive on-the-job training tasks to develop skills in the plumbing trade; and
      • Performs other related duties as assigned. Employee is designated as "Essential Personnel." All essential personnel employees are required to report for snow removal and assist with clearing grounds, roads, pathways, sidewalks or steps.





        Required Qualifications:

        • High school diploma or equivalent;
        • Demonstrated progressive experience (generally 4+ years) in the plumbing trade;
        • Demonstrated knowledge of the equipment, materials, methods, practices and tools used in the plumbing trade;
        • Knowledge of the common hazards and necessary safety precautions;
        • Knowledge of local, state, and national plumbing codes;
        • Ability to use necessary hand and power tools and testing equipment;
        • Ability to analyze plumbing systems and controls to determine problems and initiate repairs as directed by supervisor; and
        • Valid driver's license: must currently possess an appropriate, active, valid motor vehicle operator's license that meets all of GMU's requirements for operating state vehicles and equipment under Mason's Vehicle Use Policy 1411 https://universitypolicy.gmu.edu/policies/vehicle-use/. The Office of Risk Management reserves the right to review the driver's licenses and Motor Vehicle Reports (MVRs) of all candidates selected with employment contingent upon a favorable review.





          Preferred Qualifications:

          • Demonstrated progressive experience (generally 5+ years) in commercial plumbing work;
          • Completion of, or ongoing participation and/or completion of courses in vocational or technology education;
          • Journeyman's license or equivalent experience;
          • Cross-connection certificate; and
          • Commonwealth of Virginia backflow certification.
